Description
Brahma narrates to the devas and Narada the story of Jaya & Vijaya, who were Vishnu's doormen. Once, Lord Brahma created four boys and blessed them to live as eternal boy - sages. These four rishis were named Sanaka, Sanandana, Sanatana and Sanathkumara. The four boys had miraculous powers. Once, they decided to visit Lord Vishnu. After getting the permission and blessings from their father Lord Brahma, the four rishis set out for the abode of Lord Vishnu, Vaikundha. There, the four rishis were stopped at the gate by Jay and Vijay. The two of them mistook them for children, and did not let them enter this last gate. The four of them reminded Jay and Vijay that they were sons of Brahma. But Jay and Vijay did not listen. They suggested that the sages request them, and that too touching their feet. This insult was too much. The four boys got so angry that they cursed Jay and Vijay to be born as demons on the earth as they were too arrogant to be in such a sacred place. Once Vishnu came out and welcomed them, and treated them reverentially, Jay and Vijay realised their mistake too late and begged the rishis for mercy and to remove their curse. The four boys felt very happy to have got the darshan of the Lord. Jay and Vijay pleaded to Lord Vishnu to remove the curse. Lord Vishnu told them that their behavior was unpardonable, since never before had the four saints cursed anybody. Hence, their curse must take effect. However, he asked the 4 rishis to mitigate the curse so that he could get them back quickly. The rishis stated that they would be born the first time as Hiranyaksha & Hiranyakashipu, the second time as Ravan & Kumbhakarna, and the third time as Dantavakra & Shishupal. While concluding this story, Brahma points out that Hiranyaksha, Hiranyakashipu and Kumbhakarna had already been liberated, and now it was Ravan's turn.Note: the account here is at variance with the original story, where Lord Vishnu gave them a choice - to be born a hundred times as his devotees or be born thrice as his enemies. Jay and Vijay chose to be born thrice as Lord Vishnu's enemies so that they can return sooner. Also, the Sanatana rishis did not specifically state these conditions, Vishnu did, and the only mention was that they'd be ENEMIES of Vishnu, not necessarily asuras or rakshashas: indeed, Shishupala and Dantavakra/Kamsa (depending on but regardless of which version one believes) were quite mediocre warriors compared to Hiranyaksha, Hiranyakashipu, Ravan and Kumbhakarna.
